In case you missed it ............
If you were not able to attend the February AAC meeting
because of the snow? Here is a summary of what you
missed.....
The South River Keeper, Jesse Iliff, presented to the
Annapolis Anglers Club (AAC). The South River Federation and
the West/Rhode Riverkeeper, Inc recently consolidated their
two non-profit organizations to form the Arundel Rivers
Federation (ARF). Jesse’s main theme was that the unified
organizations focus on using science, restoration, advocacy
and community action to make the South, West, and Rhode
Rivers cleaner and healthier.
Problems with the Bay stem from nitrogen and phosphorus
entering the bay from tributaries (fertilizer), septic
systems, water treatment plants, air pollution, and storm
water. And yes winter road salts do impact fish populations.
As a full-time river keeper, Jesse monitors 22 sites in the
South River by boat. Items measured at each site include:
temperature, salinity, ph, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll,
water clarity, air temperature, wave height, and tide.
Grades are given to each site based on the stats documented
and trends. Fifteen swimming beaches are monitored. A
Swim Guide application gives residents information on
whether it is safe to swim in the area.
Restoration types include rain gardens, regenerative stream
conveyances, living shorelines, and oyster beds. Anne
Arundel County rivers are falling behind due to large
development projects.
On advocacy Jesse and the ARF have given testimony in
Annapolis on the foam packaging ban, the Local Governments
reporting requirements, and the oyster substrate bills.
Local initiatives include Anne Arundel County environmental
code enforcement, the county ordinance to direct fines for
environmental violations, and the no discharge zone
legislation.
Best management practices for boaters include utilizing head
pump-outs and certified green marinas.
